Aquaculture (Fish Farming)
Aquaculture — mainly catfish and tilapia — is one of Nigeria's fastest-growing agribusinesses, driven by strong demand for smoked and fresh fish. Catfish reach table size in 4–6 months. This guide covers pond/tank setup, fingerlings, feeding, and sales.
From land cultivation to post-harvest and sales
Follow each stage in order — the full value chain for aquaculture (fish farming).
Site & Pond/Tank Setup
Choose a site with reliable, clean water and good drainage. Options: earthen ponds, concrete tanks, or plastic/tarpaulin tanks (best for small spaces and urban setups). Size ponds/tanks to your capital and market. Ensure easy access and security.
- Reliable clean water source is essential
- Plastic/tarpaulin tanks suit urban/backyard setups
- Site must be secure and accessible
Fingerlings & Stocking
Buy quality fingerlings/juveniles from reputable hatcheries — stock quality determines growth and survival. Stock catfish at 10–50 per m² depending on system (lower for earthen, higher for intensive tanks). Acclimatise fingerlings before releasing.
- Buy from reputable hatcheries only
- Stocking density: 10–50/m² by system
- Acclimatise fingerlings to pond water before release
Feeding & Water Management
Feed is 60–75% of cost. Use quality floating pellets of the right size for fish stage. Feed 2× daily at 2–3% of body weight. Water quality (dissolved oxygen, ammonia, pH) is the #1 success factor — change water regularly and monitor closely.
- Floating pellets, sized to fish stage
- Feed at 2–3% of body weight, 2× daily
- Regular water change prevents ammonia build-up
Health & Sorting
Watch for disease signs (lethargy, lesions, reduced feeding). Sort fish by size regularly to prevent cannibalism (a major catfish loss). Maintain water quality to prevent most disease. Keep records of growth and mortality.
- Regular sorting prevents cannibalism
- Good water quality prevents most disease
- Record growth, feeding and mortality
Harvesting
Catfish reach table size (1–1.5 kg) in 4–6 months. Harvest by draining ponds or netting tanks. For smoked fish (a major value-add), smoke-dry using improved smoking kilns for better quality and longer shelf life.
- Catfish table size: 1–1.5 kg at 4–6 months
- Drain ponds or net tanks for harvest
- Smoking kilns add value and shelf life
Marketing & Sales
Sell fresh catfish to market women, restaurants, and pepper-soup joints. Smoked fish has strong demand and longer shelf life — package branded for retail and online sales. Tilapia sells fresh to urban markets and hotels.
- Fresh fish: market women, restaurants, pepper-soup joints
- Smoked, branded fish for retail and online sales
- Tilapia: fresh to urban markets and hotels
