Rabbit Production Business

Rabbit farming (cuniculture) is one of the lowest-capital livestock businesses in Nigeria. Rabbits multiply fast, need little space, and their meat is lean and increasingly demanded. This guide covers housing, breeding, feeding, and selling.

Does kindle in ~30 days, 6–10 kits per litter
Low space and capital requirements
Lean, high-protein white meat
Fast multiplication — grow stock quickly

From land cultivation to post-harvest and sales

Follow each stage in order — the full value chain for rabbit production business.

Housing (Hutches)

Build well-ventilated wooden or wire hutches raised off the ground, in a shaded, cool location. Each adult rabbit needs about 0.5–0.7 m². Protect from rain, direct sun, and predators (dogs, rats, snakes). Good housing prevents most health problems.

  • Raised, shaded, well-ventilated hutches
  • 0.5–0.7 m² per adult rabbit
  • Predator-proof against dogs, rats and snakes
2

Breeding Stock Selection

Start with healthy breeding does and a buck from proven, fast-growing breeds: New Zealand White, California, Chinchilla, or local crosses. A good doe kindles 6–10 kits every ~30 days. Maintain a buck-to-doe ratio of about 1:10.

  • Breeds: New Zealand White, California, Chinchilla
  • Buck-to-doe ratio ~1:10
  • Does kindle every ~30 days

Feeding & Nutrition

Rabbits eat grasses, forage, kitchen waste, and commercial rabbit pellets. Provide clean water always. A balanced diet of forage + pellets gives best growth. Avoid mouldy feed — it is fatal to rabbits. Feed twice daily.

  • Forage + commercial pellets for best growth
  • Clean water at all times
  • Mouldy feed is fatal — never feed it
4

Health & Management

Keep hutches clean and dry to prevent coccidiosis and respiratory disease. Watch for ear mites, sore hocks, and diarrhoea. Good hygiene and ventilation prevent most issues. Isolate sick animals immediately.

  • Clean, dry hutches prevent coccidiosis
  • Watch for mites, sore hocks, diarrhoea
  • Isolate sick rabbits immediately
5

Production & Reproduction

Does kindle in ~30 days. Kits wean at 4–6 weeks. Rabbits reach market weight (2–2.5 kg) at 12–16 weeks. Maintain a breeding calendar to keep production steady. Record-keeping (mating, kindling, weaning) is essential.

  • Wean kits at 4–6 weeks
  • Market weight 2–2.5 kg at 12–16 weeks
  • Keep breeding and kindling records

Marketing & Sales

Sell live rabbits to households, restaurants, and bush-meat markets. Breeding stock sells at a premium to new farmers. Rabbit meat is increasingly demanded in urban centres for health reasons. Build a customer base through social media and local markets.
